Mental Health

The term “Mental Health” covers a range of emotionally distressing difficulties that can lead to various levels of impairment in a person’s life. Such conditions include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Eating Disorders
  • Body Image Problems
  • Psychosis
  • Deliberate Self-Harm

Assessments of mental health issues are typically conducted as a prerequisite to therapeutic interventions, although in some cases they are undertaken in order to inform funding bodies of the need and recommendations for psychological treatment. An assessment of an individual’s mental health usually involves an interview regarding the history of the problems, the client’s general history and current coping strategies and support networks. In addition, psychometric questionnaires are sometimes employed as objective means of measuring symptoms and the degree of distress. These can act as a useful baseline to assess subsequent recovery. Clients are also assessed in relation to any risk that they may present.

Other issues

There are other issues which do not fall under the category of Mental Health but which nonetheless are often related to these difficulties. These include:

  • Complex Grief (grief that does not appear to resolve itself after a significant period of time)
  • Personality Disorder
  • Relationship Problems
  • Substance Misuse
  • Other Addictions
  • Chronic Pain

The range of skills of the Compass team means that these additional issues can be assessed and addressed through approaches such as Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Schema Focused Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Mindfulness.
