Neuropsychological assessment is relevant to people with learning difficulties or learning disabilities, individuals with acquired brain injuries or anyone with a disease process that can affect the brain, such as a dementia.

One of the core aspects of Clinical Psychology practice is the assessment of an individual’s cognitive or thinking abilities. Questions relating to a person’s intellectual, memory, concentration and organizational functioning are among some of the key issues that can be addressed by an individualised neuropsychological evaluation. Often the questions posed to a Psychologist include:

  • how is the individual likely to function in comparison with people of a similar age?
  • how likely are they to understand and retain information that is presented to them?
  • how should information be delivered in a way that promotes the optimum potential understanding for the individual?
  • Does there seem to have been a deterioration in the individual’s abilities over time?
  • What is the nature of the person’s profile of strengths and weaknesses?
  • What is the individual’s current IQ?
  • How is the person managing in terms of memory, concentration, organization and sensory functioning?
  • Are there strategies that can be put in place to help the individual compensate for their cognitive difficulties?

These and other questions relating to management and rehabilitation of neuropsychological difficulties can be answered through an assessment.

Assessment Process

Neuropsychological assessment involves taking a thorough history of the person’s development and abilities across time, accessing the observations of those who know the individual well and administration of a range of appropriate psychometric measures. When questions about diagnosis become pertinent, then collaboration with our medical colleagues is indicated.
