Anna is a 74-year-old woman, whose family had become increasingly concerned about her increasing forgetfulness and her apparent difficulty finding the words that she wanted. Anna had been placed on a waiting list for an NHS Memory Clinic but she and her family were concerned about how long they would have to wait until she had her assessment. Collectively, Anna and her family decided that they would prefer to seek a private Memory Clinic in order to address the problem in a more timely manner.
As part of the Memory Clinic assessment, Anna was seen by a Clinical Psychologist, who undertook a range of psychometric tests with her in order to assess her general cognitive skills, including her memory and naming abilities. The Psychologist also spoke with Anna and her husband about the changes that they had noticed and Anna’s history, including what her skills and weak areas had been throughout her life. The Psychologist was then able to feed back to Anna, her family and the medical team what changes appeared to have occurred in terms of her thinking abilities.
Sadly, the multi-disciplinary assessment indicated strong evidence to suggest that Anna was in the early stages of having Alzheimer’s Disease. Despite this, the disease was identified relatively early which meant that Anna was prescribed medication which could slow down the effects of the disease for a period of time. This allowed Anna and her family time to adjust to the bad news and to make arrangements regarding how to manage the situation in a manner that left them feeling that they had some control. In addition, the Psychologist was able to provide information for Anna and her family regarding how to manage some of the cognitive difficulties, such as planning and forgetfulness. Although very upset with the news, Anna and her family felt pleased that they had a clear understanding of the situation, that they knew what they needed to do to manage and that they had been taken seriously and treated with respect.
